In vivo evaluation of a novel alginate dressing

Abstract: Alginate dressings are currently used in the management of epidermal and dermal wounds, and provide a moist environment that leads to rapid granulation and reepithelialization. However, a cytotoxic effect on proliferation of fibroblasts and residual material with inflammation in healing wounds have been reported recently. We have developed a new alginate dressing (AGA-100), which does not have an inhibitory effect on proliferation of fibroblasts. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the new alginate dress… Show more

“…The wounds were grossly examined and photographed for characteristics evaluation. 14,20) Histopathology For histopathological study, the skins including the entire wound with adjacent normal skin were excised and fixed in 10% buffered formalin. The specimen included the dermis and the subcutaneous tissue.…”

“…In high-M alginates the calcium ions are less firmly attached to the molecule and can be more easily replaced by sodium ions, resulting in increased fluid uptake, fiber swelling, and faster gel formation [114]. Alginate dressings are widely used in the treatment of exuding wounds [117][118][119].…”

“…Gelation of alginate occurs as a result of crosslinking by divalent cations or covalent bonds [30]. Therefore, two types of alginate wound dressing products are available on the market and both effectively promote wound healing by maintaining a moist environment.…”
