In Vivo Evaluation of Genotoxic Effect of Caralluma acutangula (Decne.) N.E.Br. extract on Mice Bone Marrow Cells

Abstract: The current study was designed to evaluate the genotoxicity of Caralluma acutangula (Decne.) N.E.Br. extract on mice bone marrow cells in vivo. Two cytogenetics parameters were used, chromosomal aberrations assay and micronucleus test. Three different concentrations 125, 250, and 500 mg/kg body weight were chosen. Our results demonstrated that administration of C. acutangula extract did not significantly increase the number of structural chromosomal aberrations. No significant differences in the percentages of… Show more

“…The results confirmed the significant anticancer potential (IC 50 =38 µg/ml and 34 µg/ml respectively) of Ct capped metallic nanoparticles [51]. Other species of Caralluma such as Caralluma acutangula have also been reported for their excellent cytotoxic and anticancer activity against hepatocellular carcinoma (HEPG2) and breast cancer (MCF-7) cells [52]. Another study to evaluate the anticancer potential of methotrexate loaded chitosan nanoparticles was performed in HeLa cells.…”

“…Furthermore, the obtained IC 50 values with FRAP test concerning hydroethanolic, flavonoids, saponins, and mucilages fractions were 5.196 mg/ml, 4.537 mg/ml, 3.05 mg/ml, and 6.02 mg/ml, respectively. ese results can 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 e methanolic extract of Caralluma acutangula exhibited effects with concentrations varying between 0 and 50 μg/ml on MCF-7 (breast cancer) and HEPG2 (hepatocellular carcinoma) [44]. e methanolic extracts of Caralluma acutangula possess an interesting antiproliferative activity on HeLa (cervix cancer), MCF7 (breast cancer), and HEPG2 (hepatocellular carcinoma) cells [45].…”

“…The results are presented in Table 1. Crude methanolic extract has excellent free radical scavenging with IC 50 7.89 µg mLG 1 which is comparable to ascorbic acid (IC 50 , 5.63 µg mLG 1 ), a very important antioxidant compound. Table 1 showed that by increasing concentration of E. cactus Ehrenb methanolic extract, the scavenging activities also increasing (50<100<150<200<250< 500 µg mLG 1 ).…”

“…Approximately 7.5×104 cells mLG 1 was seeded in a six-well tissue culture plate and different concentrations of the extract was added after 24 h. For the determination of growth rate, smaller aliquots were collected in 0.5 mL tubes, trypan blue (0.4%) was added to the cell suspension and the number of cells (viable-unstained and non-viable-blue) was counted using a hemocytometer. The media were not changed during the induction period.…”
