In vivo investigation of the multi‐exponentialT2decay in human white matter at 7 T: Implications for myelin water imaging at UHF

Abstract: Introduction: Multi-component T 2 mapping using a gradient-and spin-echo (GraSE) acquisition has become standard for myelin water imaging at 3 T. Higher magnetic field strengths promise signal-to-noise ratio benefits but face specific absorption rate limits and shortened T 2 times. This study investigates compartmental T 2 times in vivo and addresses advantages and challenges of multi-component T 2 mapping at 7 T.

“…Direct saturation is linked to short T 2 of the free pool as observed in myelin water and iron‐rich structures which decreases at higher field strength. However, the geometric mean T 2 s of different structures are proportionally shorter at 7T relative to those observed at 3T 56 . Hence, we do not observe tissue‐type specific effects.…”

“…The 2D MESE sequences tend to have lower SNR levels than 3D (∼300 in our experiments), which are under the sufficient values suggested for ideal MWI analysis (>700), 28 therefore, a compromise on ideal SNR is needed for 2D MESE work, which then points to the value of an independent B 1 + map. For 3D MESE methods, a higher SNR threshold is possible, but recent work with 3D GRASE has lower SNR (150‐300 range) 21,34,35 . The high SNR requirement (700) for multi‐component T 2 analysis of 3D MESE data is considered too strict in recent literature 21,27 …”

“…For a 48-echo scan at 3 T, repetition times are around 1 s. The much higher specific absorption rate at 7 T requires longer repetition times. 29 Furthermore, the T 2 relaxation times are shortened with increasing field strength. Initial work in human MWI at 7 T used the GraSE approach, 29 but it is anticipated that compressed sensing approaches will be more successful at ultra-high fields.…”
