In Vivo Study for Anti-inflammatory Activity of Bauhinia variegata L. Leaves

Abstract: Bauhinia variegata L. (Rakta kanchan) has been traditionally used in India for treatment of a variety of inflammatory conditions, skin diseases, stomatitis, leprosy and for wound healing. Using mostly in vitro models, a number of published reports confirmed the anti-inflammatory potential of the leaves, bark and roots of this tree. The isolation of a bioactive triterpene saponin from the leaves and a flavonol glycoside from the roots has also been reported. In the present study, we have evaluated the anti-infl… Show more

“…The activity was found to be more pronounced in the petroleum ether fraction. These bioactivities compared favourably with diclofenac sodium, which was used as positive control, and confirms the traditional usefulness of this plant for the treatment of both acute and chronic inflammatory conditions [22].…”

“…Interestingly, 5 days of treatment with PG, PO, and their combination have significantly ameliorated the inflammatory hallmarks of croton oil-induced hemorrhoids in rats compared to positive control. This may be due to the potent anti-inflammatory activity of the herbs present in the tested formulation, such as, M azadirachta, E officinalis , T chebula , and B aristata [ 18 22 ].…”

“…The third phase is known to be mediated by prostaglandins and occurs between 2.5 and 6 h and is the most important process in the inflammatory response. [ 22 23 ] The maximal vascular response, closely associated with leukocyte migration to the inflamed area, also reaches its maximum level in the final phase. It is well-known that prostaglandins, modulators of inflammatory responses, play an important role in the inflammatory mechanism[ 24 ] with COX acting as the key enzyme that synthesizes prostaglandins and thromboxane from arachidonic acid.…”
