Inactivation ofPenicillium digitatumSpores by a High-Density Ground-State Atomic Oxygen-Radical Source Employing an Atmospheric-Pressure Plasma

Abstract: Penicillium digitatum spores were inactivated using an oxygen-radical source that supplies only neutral oxygen radicals. Vacuum ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy was used to measure the ground-state atomic oxygen [O (3Pj)] densities and they were estimated to be in the range of 1014–1015 cm-3. The inactivation rate of P. digitatum spores was correlated with the O (3Pj) density. The result indicates that O (3Pj) is the dominant species in the inactivation. The inactivation rate constant of P. digitatum spores… Show more

“…Detailed studies to unravel the role of singlet oxygen species in inactivation of fungi have been carried out by Hori and co‐workers (Hashizume et al., , , ; Iseki et al., ; Ishikawa et al., ). Through a comprehensive set of experiments, they reported that ROS, particularly O( 3 P j ), from an atmospheric pressure oxygen plasma potentially inactivates fungi.…”

“…DI water (18.2 MΩ•cm at 25 • C) was produced by a Direct-Q 3UV (Millipore, Tokyo, Japan) system. To compare the performance of the developed AALCA to commonly used plasma sources, DI water was treated using AALCA, a commercially available NEAPPJ (PN-110/120TPG, NU Global Co., Ltd., Nagoya, Japan) [40], and a high-density nonequilibrium atmospheric pressure radical source (NEAPRS, Tough Plasma FPA10, Fuji MFG Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan) [4,31,41].…”

“…Scale bar 25 lm information on cell size and granularity. These results indicate that the size of plasma-treated ovarian cancer cells decreased compared to untreated cells (Iseki et al 2011). Flow cytometry is used for many types of medical and biological analyses such as for apoptosis, cell cycle, and the immunophenotyping of peripheral blood cells.…”
