“…In the case of CCK there is a possible advantage to this, since fragments like OP-CCK possess relatively high potency, but low specificity for the primary target organs of the hormone (see above). In the rat, pentagastrin is known to be both enzymically inactivated by the liver and eliminated in the büe (Wyllie, Stagg & Temperley, 1974). At least one possible mechanism of inactivation is by removal of the C02 H-terminal amide group, for deamidated gastrins are not biologically active (Gregory, 1970); an enzyme which selectively cleaved the amide group from NH2-acylated tetrapeptide of gastrin has been identified in the liver, small intestinal and fundic mucosa of rat, hamster, cat and dog (Walsh & Laster, 1973).…”
