Incarcerated appendicitis in port-site hernia: A rare case report

Abstract: Introduction: Acute appendicitis is a known surgical emergency. It is rare for port site hernia to contain incarcerated inflamed appendix. Case presentation: We describe a distinctive case of incarcerated appendicitis in port-site hernia following laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Acute appendicitis was pre-operatively CT diagnosed and appendectomy was performed followed by primary repair of the hernia defect. Awareness of atypical presentation and possible complications may raise the clinical suspicion index to a… Show more

“…The herniation of an otherwise normal vermiform appendix in to a drain site has previously been described sporadically in several case reports [5][6][7], including two cases of evisceration of the appendix [8,9]. While appendicitis has previously been documented in port-site hernia [4,10], we describe what we believe to be the first reported case of acute appendicitis in a drain-site hernia.…”

“…3 The second case was two years following a laparoscopic cholecystectomy where a drain was left through the right iliac fossa at the 5-mm port site. 4 Both of these cases presented with acute appendicitis. It is likely that, because of a narrowed-neck defect, incarceration of the appendix is soon followed by ischaemia and appendicitis.…”
