Incarceration of Meckel's diverticulum in a left paraduodenal Treitz' hernia

Abstract: Meckel's diverticula incarcerated in a hernia were first described anecdotally by Littré, a French surgeon, in 1700. Meckel, a German anatomist and surgeon, explained the pathophysiology of this disease 100 years later. In addition, a congenital paraduodenal mesocolic hernia, known as a Treitz hernia, is a rare cause of small bowel obstruction. “…The main clinical sign is gastrointestinal bleeding, reported in 25-50% of symptomatic patients with MD (6). In children, the most common presentation associated with MD is intestinal obstruction usually caused by intussusception, fibrous band volvulus, torsion of the diverticulum and Littre's internal hernia (3,(7)(8)(9)(10). Peritonitis is also a common clinical presentation in children, which results from a perforated diverticulum or diverticulitis (11,12).…”

“…A total of 159 items with an available abstract were filtered using the keywords paraduodenal hernia. Ninety-five of them, including the former, [9][10][11][12][13] with a total of 120 case reports, were about left-sided paraduodenal hernias. As we considered the Treitz hernia to be a particular left-sided hernia (as described above), we reviewed these articles to find similarities with our case.…”
