Incidence and Characteristics of Adverse Events after COVID-19 Vaccination in a Population-Based Programme

Abstract: Compliance with vaccination is linked to its safety. In Italy, a plan to identify people who could be at an increased risk of adverse events (AEs) was defined so they could be vaccinated in a protected setting. We conducted an audit to describe the process of AE risk assessment and occurrence in the Reggio Emilia Province in Italy in people who received any of the four COVID-19 vaccines currently used in Italy. Incidence of AEs was calculated by dose and type of vaccine and type of setting (standard vs. protec… Show more

“…We observed a lower frequency of side effects reported after the second dose compared with the first dose. This finding contrasts with other vaccine platforms such as mRNA vaccines where in clinical trials and real-world data, the second dose appears to be more reactogenic than the first dose 17,18,22 .…”

“…For all three interviews, approximately 12.6% of participants were people living with HIV (PLWH). The median time between follow up interview and first vaccine dose was 17 days IQR (16)(17)(18)(19). The median time between second vaccine dose and follow up interview was 10 days IQR (8 -13).…”

“…Whole inactivated vaccines have played an important role in the global public health response to COVID-19 and are widely used in Africa. Although there is significant literature on adverse events following vaccination with mRNA and viral vector vaccines [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ] there is limited real-world data on the side effect profile following vaccination with inactivated vaccines in Africa.…”

“…This has not affected vaccination schedules in most countries, with clear promotion of vaccination for people with asthma, although the Italian Society of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology recommend that people with uncontrolled asthma may first require review in an allergy clinic. 77…”
