Incidence and Characteristics of Non-Hodgkin Lymphomas in a Multicenter Case File of Patients With Hepatitis C Virus–Related Symptomatic Mixed Cryoglobulinemias

Abstract: The overall risk of NHL in patients with CS is about 35 times higher than in the general population (12 times higher if nonaggressive lymphomas are excluded). The presence of CS did not significantly affect the treatment of newly diagnosed lymphomas.

“…The predominance of MALT lymphoma in SS-HCV and primary SS but not in HCV suggests an important role for SS in the lymphomagenesis of patients with SS-HCV. Recent studies have also demonstrated a predominance of low-grade lymphoma in patients with HCV with other associated autoimmune diseases such as cryoglobulinemia (39,40). In our study, the predominance of MALT lymphoma in patients with SS-HCV also had a prognostic significance.…”

“…4,28,29 Analysis of the BCR sequences in HCV NHL suggested that chronic antigenic stimulation, due to HCV persistence, could drive these lymphocyte proliferations in a manner similar to that hypothesized for Helicobacter pylori and MALT lymphomas. 12 Nevertheless, sequence data are insufficient to draw conclusions on BCR specificity.…”

“…555 Similarly, other studies have not reported increased NHL risk in association with HCV infection, [555][556][557][558][559][560][561] whereas numerous other studies have reported positive associations. 561,[562][563][564][565][566][567][568][569][570][571][572][573][574][575][576][577][578][579] Gisbert et al 580 conducted a meta-analysis of studies that compared the prevalence of HCV infection in B-cell lymphoma cases with that in controls. An excess risk (meta-OR 5 10.82, 95% CI, 7.34-15.94) of NHL was reported across 10 studies that provided odds ratios.…”
