Incidence and Clinical Characteristics of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) after Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) with DVT Chemoprophylaxis

Abstract: Objective: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is very common and leading cause of death due to this procedure. The objective of this study was to investigate the incidence and clinical characteristics of DVT after TKA with DVT chemoprophylaxis. Methods: This is a prospective cohort study in single institution. The patients received postoperative DVT chemoprophylaxis (low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) or Fondaparinux), followed by duplex ultrasonography to check for DVT 1-2 weeks a… Show more

“…Here the ratio of symptomatic to asymptomatic DVT is 3(0.56%): 5 (0.94%). 15 Data of 23,475 TKA patients (837 citation of 47 studies were included) conducted across from January 1st, 1996 to September 30th, 2011 (collected across Medline, Embase and Cochrane library), shows symptomatic VTE occurred in 288 patients (incidence 1.2%) and pulmonary embolism in 182 patients (incidence 0.78%). All the patients in the study were on chemoprophylaxis.…”

“…All TKA surgeries were performed under a tourniquet. All patients received subcutaneous injection Dalteparin 5000 IU once daily for 14 days in TKA and 35 days in THA patients as postoperative thromboprophylaxis [18]. All patients were given mechanical thromboprophylaxis in the form of compression socks and pneumatic compression devices postoperatively.…”

“…Venous thromboembolism (VTE) has been a concern for orthopedists for a long period of time [5][6][7]. VTE includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), which are characterized by high incidence, high mortality, and high morbidity [8,9]. In clinical practice, VTE can cause serious and potentially fatal complications and lead to fatal outcomes.…”
