“…However, more recent retrospective studies based on modern cohorts, and including both ECMO and non-ECMO CDH survivors, have found the incidence of SNHL to be as low as 1/42 (2.3%), 9/122 (7.4%), and 3/112 (2.7%) [28,34,45]. This rate is comparable to the prevalence of SNHL in all neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) patients [63].…”

“…Partridge et al found that SNHL was significantly and most strongly associated with duration of aminoglycoside and loop diuretic therapy. They also reported significant associations with requirement for ECMO, prolonged hospital course, duration of ventilation, requirement for tracheostomy, severity of GERD, and reduced APGAR scores at 5 min [45]. Interestingly, Partridge et al also examined the incidence of conductive hearing loss in a cohort of 112 CDH patients and found that the incidence of 34% was much higher than the 0.5e0.9% incidence reported in all NICU graduates in the literature.…”

“…Neurocognitive and functional delays, learning disabilities, behavioral disorders, and hearing impairments are increasingly recognized among the spectrum of developmental problems in CDH survivors [2][3][4][5][6][7][8].…”

“…We suggest that in this specific scenario, the team proceed with surgery while patients are on extracorporeal life support or adopt a palliative approach, in accordance with family wishes. In recent years, the focus of outcome improvement in CDH has shifted from mortality reduction to the prevention, early identification and timely management of survivor morbidity, including cardiopulmonary, 71 75 and reduced quality of life for the child and the family. 76 The American Academy of Pediatrics has published a set of recommendations for the surveillance of CDH survivors 77 that can effectively be implemented in specialized interdisciplinary clinics.…”
