Incidence and lifetime risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in a Southern European population

Abstract: The incidence rate of dementia in this Southern European city was slightly lower than in previous studies in North-West Europe. LTR of dementia and AD seems to be slightly increased with age. The association of illiteracy with higher LTR of AD is intriguing.

“…This reflects a known difference in survival between men and women, women dying at an older age than men and therefore having more time to develop dementia. This finding, however, is even more emphasized by the fact that even after taking into account age differences, women are known to have a higher prevalence of AD than men [4,12,13]. Gender differences are also described in the diagnostic workup to assess AD and in the disease evolution [14,15], both items that can also be studied using longitudinal BNA data.…”

“…It has been proven that the incidence rate of AD increases greatly with age. 4,5 Especially, with an increased life expectancy and aging population, the number of Alzheimer's patients will rapidly increase as the world population grows and people live longer. So, the number is expected to increase to about 115 million in 2050 in the absence of an effective treatment.…”
