Incidence and operations of median, ulnar and radial entrapment neuropathies in Finland: a nationwide register study

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence rates and operations for carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar and radial neuropathies in specialist care in Finland. Patients diagnosed with entrapment neuropathies of the upper extremity were identified from the Care Register for Health Care, 2007–2016. There were 81,911 cases in 54,095,070 person-years. The total crude incidence rates per 100,000 person-years among women and men were 197 and 105 for carpal tunnel syndrome, 26 and 36 for ulnar neuropathies, a… Show more

“…The incidence of CTS has been reported to vary between 105 and 419 per 100 000 person-years peaking around 50 years of age [2,3,6,7]. CTS occurs more commonly in females than males although the difference has been shown to diminish with advancing age [2,3,6,7]. The prevalence of CTS symptoms have been reported to be 7.8 % in the working population [8].…”

“…Ulnar nerve entrapment (UNE) is the second most common entrapment neuropathy in the upper extremity after carpal tunnel syndrome 3 . Based on previous epidemiological studies, the annual incidence rate of UNE per 100,000 person-years ranges between 25 and 36 among men and between 17 and 26 among women 4 6 . The incidence rate increases until the middle age, before declining again, with the age peak of incidence varying around the fifth to seventh decade 4 7 .…”

“…Entrapment mononeuropathies are common and contribute to considerable morbidity in the community. The most common entrapment is carpal tunnel syndrome, with an estimated incidence of 197 per 100,000 women, 1 , 2 and much higher rates among employees in certain industries (eg, up to 42% prevalence in poultry workers). 3 , 4 Early diagnosis is essential in entrapment mononeuropathy, to limit nerve injury and associated morbidity.…”
