Incidence and Progression of Retinal and Vascular Lesions in Long‐term Diabetes

Abstract

The vascular changes which tend to develop in long-term diabetes are generally considered under two separate headings (Adlersberg (l), Burger (2)) :1. Disease of the larger and smaller arteries.2. Diabetic angiopathy in the strict meaning of the term, i. e. capillary lesions in the eye and in the kidney. Though recent investigations into their anatomical (Burger (2)), histochemical (Randerath (3)), physiological (Bloch (4)) and biochemical (Adlersberg ( l ) , Kinsell (5), Salt ( 6 ) ) nature are promising, the main problems remain as yet unresolved.Having nothing better to offer at this moment, the clinician attempts to protect his patients from diabetic vascular disease by rigid control of the diabetic state with diet and insulin. The question whether this approach is justified by the results, can be answered only by studying and re-studying our patients with the
