Incidence and radiological pattern of eosinophilic granuloma: a retrospective study in a Chinese tertiary hospital

Abstract: Background The incidence and radiological patterns of eosinophilic granuloma (EG) in China is not clear. We described the incidence, presentation, and imaging characteristics of Chinese EG patients in a tertiary hospital. Methods A retrospective chart review was performed from January 2004 to October 2017 at a single tertiary general hospital. Seventy-six patients were pathologically identified as EG. Besides, 60 patients with preoperative imaging diagnosis of “EG” were… Show more

“…Interestingly, the middle part only had eosinophilic granuloma, making up 100% of cases. This matches what we know about eosinophilic granuloma tending to appear in the shafts of long bones, with irregular lytic areas, inner surface erosion, and cortical damage [ 15 ]. The presence of eosinophilic granuloma in the middle clavicle region, similar to its tendency in long bones, raises intriguing possibilities for further study.…”

“…Eosinophilic granuloma is a type of benign bone tumor, and the mildest subtype of Langerhans cell histiocytosis. This condition has been described in many different anatomic locations within the human body [2 , 3 , [6] , [7] , [8] , 11 , 12] , and may present either in a single or multiple foci. This disease typically affects the axial skeleton, however, may also affect long bones with the majority of lesions occurring in the diaphysis [1] .…”

“…Imaging studies such as radiographs, MRI and CT scans show a wide variation of nonspecific findings including bone destruction, cortical changes, periosteal reaction, ossification, as well as soft tissue inflammation and edema [8] . Therefore, the diagnosis must be confirmed histopathologically and immunohistochemically with a biopsy.…”

“…The edges of EG tumors may be scalloped, beveled confluent, show a sequestrum that resembles buttons, or beveled with the surrounding soft tissue mass. The EG tumor destroyed lytic bone by perforation or osteolysis [22]. More men than women are affected.…”
