Incidence and risk factors for back pain in young floorball and basketball players: A Prospective study

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of back pain in young basketball and floorball players under 21 years of age. The secondary aim was to examine risk factors especially for low back pain (LBP). Nine basketball and nine floorball teams (n = 396) participated in this prospective follow-up study (2011-2014). Young athletes (mean age 15.8 ± 1.9) performed physical tests and completed a questionnaire at baseline. The follow-up lasted 1-3 years per player. During the follow-up, back pain reporte… Show more

“…Back pain is common among youth athletes [1]. Our previous findings show that nearly half of floorball players (45%) and 64% of basketball players have had LBP during the preceding 12 months [2].…”

“…Previous studies investigating intrinsic risk factors for LBP in youth have focused mostly on lower extremity and trunk muscle strength and endurance, flexibility and anthropometric measures [1,7]. Prospective investigations into association between LBP and movement patterns in youth athletes are scarce [8] and most of the previous studies investigating back pain in athletes have been largely cross-sectional [9].…”

“…Therefore, basketball players are at a higher risk of LBP. Basketball entails sudden turns, stops, and landings, all of which require sudden and repetitive lumbar flexion, rotation, and hyperextension (Noormohammadpour et al 2016;Rossi et al 2018). These motions impose excessive loads on the lumbar spine, probably leading to a higher prevalence of LBP among basketball players (Pasanen et al 2016).…”

“…Although there have been many studies [5] [6] [7] [8] that demonstrate the in uence of lumbosacral dysplasia and spondylolysis on LBP in young athletes, there have been few studies on the distribution of SBO among young people in other occupations.Because the intensity of exercise and the load on the lumbar spine of young people in other occupations are less than those of athletes, their symptoms and abnormal imaging ndings deserve our attention and vigilance. Therefore, we designed this study to investigate the distribution of SBO in young people with LBP and to classify the laminar morphology of SBO from the perspective of laminar development.…”
