Incidence and Risk Factors of Retinopathy of Prematurity in Mashhad, Northeast Iran

Abstract: BackgroundRetinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vascular retinal disease that can cause low vision or blindness and affects premature newborns of very low birth weight.ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and risk factors for ROP among very premature infants in Mashhad located northeast of Iran.Material and MethodsIn this cross-sectional study performed between 2006 and 2010, predisposing factors and severity of ROP were evaluated in very premature infants (<32 gestational weeks).… Show more

“…Several other studies have reported similar incidence of ROP as in India (27%) 14 , Iran (26.2%) 15 , Singapore (29.3%) 9 , Nepal (29.5%) 11 , India (22.3%) 16 and a little higher in Turkey (30%) 17 and much lower in China (12.7%) 18 .…”

“…In our study, the mechanical ventilation and CPAP were non-significant risk factors for ROP and this was in agreement with Hakeem et al 19 , Abrishami et al 27 .. However, Shah et al 24 in their study observed significant association between mechanical ventilation, CPAP and ROP.…”

“…Apnea and oxygen therapy were associated with development of ROP in the study by Chaudhari et al 9 High flow oxygen therapy by CPAP was associated with the development of ROP similar to studies by Shah et al 14 The duration of oxygen therapy for development of ROP was significant as an independent variable in accordance to Karna et al 18 Similar to our study Gupta et al 19 states that oxygen, sepsis and apnea were significant as independent risk factors. Majid Abrishami et al 20 states that low Apgar score is significantly associated with development of ROP. In our study low Apgar had a significant role in development of ROP but on regression analysis it was not found significant as an independent factor.…”
