Incidence of 14 grapevine viruses in Korean vineyards

Abstract: The incidence of grapevine virus infections in Korean vineyards was investigated from July to October, 2020. A total of 177 petiole samples were collected from two or three different cultivars in each of four different regions; these were examined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction assay for the presence of 14 major viruses. The overall occurrence of grapevine viruses was 91.0%, and the level of incidence was high irrespective of region or cultivar. The predominant viruses were grapevine leafro… Show more

“…GFkV was first reported on Shine Muscat ( Vitis labruscana Bailey x V. vinifera ) at Okcheon of, South Korea, in 2017 (Jo et al, 2017). Recently, the incidence of grapevine virus infections was investigated in a Korean vineyard, revealing that GFkV was one of the predominant grapevine viruses in Korea (Kim et al, 2021). Currently, GFkV has been listed in plant pathogens by Korea's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (KMAFRA) for virus‐free grapevine screening for a virus‐free certification programme.…”

“…The cultivation area of grapes surveyed in Korea was 14,655 ha in 2022, which ranks 4th among all fruit crops in terms of cultivation area (Korean Statistical Agency, 2022). Hence, grapes are regarded as a very important crop in Korea (Kim et al, 2021a), but the present grape cultivation area in Korea is only 80% of what it was in the past 10 years. The competitiveness of the Korean grape industry has also been weakened.…”

“…Because of the success of the grape cultivar Shine Muscat in Korea, consumer interest in high-quality seedless grapes has significantly increased (Kim et al, 2021). In Korea, most seedless grapes are currently produced by treating genetically seeded grape cultivars, such as Shine Muscat and Kyoho, with plant growth regulators before and after flowering.…”
