Incidence of bluetongue virus precipitating antibodies in sera of some domestic animals in the Sudan

Abstract: SUMMARYTo determine the presence andprevalence of bluetongue (BT) infection ina variety of domestic animal species in different geographical regions of the Sudan, a serological study using the agar gel precipitation technique was initiated. A total of 2142 serum samples were examined. Of the numbers tested approximately 28 % of sheep, 11x2 % of goats, 8 % of cattle and 4'9 % of camels were positive for groupspecific antibodies to BT virus antigen, indicating previous exposure to BT infection. None of the sampl… Show more

“…BTV antibodies were prevalent both at herd and individual animal level and were detected in all farms tested in Gazira and Khartoum States. However, prevalence rates in the present study were generally higher than those observed in previous studies [15, 19, 20]. This discrepancy may partly be ascribed to the apparent greater sensitivity of the cELISA used in the present study compared to that of the AGID technique used in earlier studies.…”

“…A modification of the technique described by Ouchterlony (1949) was adopted, essentially as outlined earlier (Eisa, Karrar & Abdel Rahim, 1979), except that the diffusion medium consisted of 1 % purified agar (Difco, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) in buffered saline (pH 7 2). To check on lines of identity for interpretation, positive and negative control preparations were included in each series of tests.…”

“…Bluetongue virus (BTV) is widespread in the Sudan (Eisa, Karrar & Abu Elrahim, 1979;Eisa et al 1980; W. P. Taylor (personal communication) but so far there have been no isolates of this or any other virus from Culicoides midges in that country (Boorman & Mellor, 1982). Previous work has shown that C. kingi (schultzei gp) and C. imicola are the only Culicoides species collected around cattle and sheep pens in the Khartoum area in sufficient numbers to be efficient vectors of BTV.…”
