Incidence of ceftriaxone‐associated gallbladder pseudolithiasis

Abstract: We prospectively evaluated the incidence of gallbladder pseudolithiasis in children treated with high doses of ceftriaxone for a variety of serious infections. We also monitored the time interval needed for this phenomenon to develop and resolve completely after initiation and cessation of treatment, respectively. Included in this study are 44 children treated with ceftriaxone 100 mg/kg/d divided into 2 equal intravenous doses and followed by serial abdominal sonography. Eleven children developed pseudolithias… Show more

“…In other 4 patients disappearance of gallstones was observed, but three of them had a pseudolithiasis (following antibiotic-therapy with ceftriaxone) and one had fetal gallstones. Since these conditions are described as auto-resolving diseases [20][21][22][23] , the disappearance was not There were no post-operative complication and in no case residual cholelithiasis or recurrence of gallstones during the follow-up were observed. In three patients recurrence of clinical symptoms after treatment (post-cholecystectomy syndrome) was described.…”

“…The incidence of ceftriaxone-associated biliary sludge was reported between 17-57.5% (Schaad et al 1988;Papadopoulou et al 1999;Palanduz et al 2000;Herek et al 2001;Bor et al 2004;Ozturk et al 2005). Higher rates were reported with higher doses of ceftriaxone in those studies (100 mg/kg/day vs 60-70 mg/kg/day).…”

“…The formation of biliary sludge is also reported within the first 3 days of the treatment in more than half of the patients receiving ceftriaxone (Papadopoulou et al 1999). High daily dosages and long-term duration of ceftriaxone therapy seems to be the main risk factors for the development of biliary sludge.…”
