Incidence of Co-Infections of HIV, Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 and Syphilis in a Large Cohort of Men Who Have Sex with Men in Beijing, China

Abstract: BackgroundThe HIV-epidemic among MSM in China has worsened. In this key population, prevalence of HSV-2 and syphilis infection and co-infection with HIV is high.MethodsA longitudinal study was conducted (n = 962) in Beijing, China, with three overlapping cohorts (n = 857, 757 and 760) consisting of MSM that were free from pairs of infections of concern (i.e. HIV-HSV-2, HIV-syphilis, HSV-2-syphilis) at baseline to estimate incidence of HIV, HSV-2, syphilis, and those of co-infection.ResultsThe incidence of HIV,… Show more

“…Although surveillance of MSM is limited in low and middle income countries, high rates of HIV and syphilis co-infection have been found among MSM in Peru, Panama, India, Malawi and Uganda [59], indicating that HIV and syphilis co-infection is in fact a global challenge. Similar reports from China demonstrate increasing HIV and syphilis co-infection among MSM [1012], with a 2.6% estimated prevalence of co-infection [10, 13]. All available evidence supports that the epidemic of HIV and syphilis co-infection is worsening and primarily concentrated among MSM.…”

“…We also noted that 7/61 (11%) T. pallidum PCR-positive patients had HSV-2-syphilis coinfections. High rates of coinfection have been reported previously, particularly in cohorts of men who have sex with men, and occur due to shared routes of sexual transmission (13).…”

“…Syphilis could generate genital ulcers and increase the likelihood of HIV virus shedding [21,22]. The course of syphilis is accelerated in patients infected with HIV, and these patients frequently exhibit atypical lesions [23,24].…”
