Incidence of Colorectal Cancer and Extracolonic Cancers in Veteran Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Abstract: The incidence of CRC was not significantly higher in our veteran patients with IBD than in control patients in the general VA population. In contrast, our IBD patients had a significantly higher risk for extracolonic cancers than controls, including cancers of the skin, kidneys, prostate, and pancreas. 10.1093/ibd/izx046_video1Video 1.izx046_Mosher_Video5734484616001.

“…In a recent, large, retrospective study at a single medical center, men with IBD undergoing PC screening had a greater than four-fold increase in incident PC and high-grade PC compared to men without IBD 9 . In a case-control study within a shared, equal-access healthcare system, men with IBD had a 70% increased risk of PC 7 . In contrast, other studies and a meta-analysis found no clear association between IBD and PC [14][15][16] .…”

“…While inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an established risk factor for colorectal cancer 6 , associations between IBD with prostate cancer have been reported for some studies [7][8][9][10][11][12][13] but not others [14][15][16] . We thus conducted a prospective study of men from the large-scale, population-based UK Biobank cohort 17 to test this association.…”

“…On the other hand, the risk of lymphoma, non-melanoma skin cancers and bladder cancer is increased by medication with thiopurine (53). A risk of developing cancer has also been shown on the skin, kidneys, prostate, and pancreas (54).…”

“…The gastrointestinal tract hosts the largest population of commensal microbes in the human body, and the interplay between microbiota and the intestinal immune system has a profound influence on the pathology of colitis and CAC . Specific bacterial strains within the intestinal microbiota, such as Fusobacterium nucleatum , Escherichia coli , and Bacteroides fragilis , have been indicated as driving forces in DNA damage and tumor progression . Targeting the microbiota may have potential as a preventive and therapeutic approach to CRC …”

“…[5][6][7] Specific bacterial strains within the intestinal microbiota, such as Fusobacterium nucleatum, Escherichia coli, and Bacteroides fragilis, have been indicated as driving forces in DNA damage and tumor progression. 8 Targeting the microbiota may have potential as a preventive and therapeutic approach to CRC. 9 Probiotics and their beneficial effects have been extensively studied over the past 30 years, with particular success in the management of infant diarrhea, food allergies, and IBD.…”
