Incidence of Heterotopic Ossification in Anterior Based Muscle Sparing Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Retrospective Radiographic Review

Abstract: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a known complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA). The anterior based muscle sparing (ABMS) approach is a variation of a direct anterior approach through the Watson–Jones interval. To date, few studies have evaluated HO formation following this surgery. We examine the incidence of HO in a consecutive series of THAs using this approach by three different surgeons at a single center. Standard preoperative radiographs were examined to determine the type of degenerative a… Show more

“…All this was possible also thanks to the development and improvement of adhesive techniques, which allowed an ever increasing use of polymers in the dental field. Other materials already known, such as titanium, are able to be used in contact with tissues and to build prostheses [33,34], but composite materials, as already mentioned, are able to combine the mechanical characteristics of their components [35][36][37][38][39][40][41]; thus, obtaining hybrid materials with unique characteristics.…”

“…In this way, further components could be eliminated, making the work-flow even easier. Passages and exchanges of information with the dental laboratory are of fundamental importance, as are meetings in order to elaborate a treatment and speak a common language for the good of the patient and practicality in the daily clinic [12][13][14][15][16][17]. The superior prosthesis, in its delivery, was inserted and kept in place alone according to the OT Bridge method, having the Seeger inside the abutment with a seal of 7 kg, which allows it to lock it with a click ( Figure A14).…”

“…2,15,17 With the different so-called anterior-based muscle sparing approaches, one study reported a prevalence of 36% with a minimum follow-up of 9 months. 18 However, severe bone formation was uncommon. 18 One study reported that the previously commonly used direct lateral approach had a prevalence of 29%.…”
