Incidence of infants born small- and large-for-gestational-age in an Italian cohort over a 20-year period and associated risk factors

Abstract: BackgroundWe assessed the incidence of infants born small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and large-for-gestational-age (LGA) in an Italian cohort over 20 years (1993–2013). Furthermore, we investigated maternal factors associated with SGA and LGA births.MethodsA retrospective review of obstetric records was performed on infants born in Chieti (Italy) covering every 5th year over a 20-year period, specifically examining data for 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008, and 2013. Infants with birthweight <10th percentile were defined… Show more

“…Both our and prior findings suggest that PCOS is an independent risk factor for pregnancy‐related metabolic disorders, which is exacerbated by obesity. These are of critical importance for consideration in screening and management given that GDM, GHTN, and PE may proceed to life‐threatening complications for mother and offspring, increasing intervention for delivery, and increasing diabetes mellitus and cardiometabolic risk in both mothers and infants …”

“…Stillbirth, preterm birth (PTB), and small for gestational age (SGA) (as a proxy for fetal growth restriction, FGR) continue to be major public health problems, despite improvements in health care. They are the leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality . Globally, around 2.6 million infants are stillborn each year .…”

“…While some prior studies have reported that PCOS is associated with a higher rate of LGA babies, this was not supported by recent meta‐analyses . In the general population several factors including obesity, excessive GWG, diabetes mellitus, GDM, multiparity, age and certain ethnicities are associated with increased risk of LGA babies . As overweight and obesity and diabetes mellitus are elevated in PCOS and the older age of women with PCOS, it may be expected that PCOS would be associated with a greater prevalence of LGA babies .…”

“…Prior studies report an increased risk of adverse obstetric outcomes and also increased risk of metabolic complications in LGA babies later in life. 37,38 While some prior studies have reported that PCOS is associated with a higher rate of LGA babies, [39][40][41] this was not supported by recent meta-analyses. 23,42,43 In the general population several factors including obesity, excessive GWG, diabetes mellitus, GDM, multiparity, age and certain ethnicities are associated with increased risk of LGA babies.…”
