Incidence of primary malignant orbital tumours in the Netherlands

Abstract: Aims To describe the incidence and relative frequencies of primary malignant orbital tumours in the Netherlands from 1989 to 2006. Methods All registered primary malignant orbital tumours were extracted from the population-based database of the Netherlands Cancer Registry. Age-adjusted incidence of malignant orbital tumours per 10 000 000 persons per year and the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) were computed. Results A total of 367 malignant orbital tumours were registered. The average age-adjusted i… Show more

“…A study by Modi (India) also reports retinoblastoma as the commonest malignant tumor in children but the results hugely differ from the studies conducted by Gunalp and Gunduz (Turkey) and Koopman (Netherlands) who have reported rhabdomyosarcoma to be the commonest tumor among children 8,11,12…”

“…Retinoblastoma was followed by Squamous cell carcinoma of the eyelid (15.62%) which was found to be the most common tumor of the adults, followed by adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland (9%), and lymphomas/leukaemias (8%). However, a study conducted in China reports lacrimal gland to be the commonest source of malignant tumors and studies conducted in Netherlands and Florida reported Lymphomas as the most common malignant tumors 2,8,9. The study from India reported Squamous cell carcinoma to be the commonest 5.…”

“…23,24 Benign pleomorphic adenomas represent the majority of benign lacrimal masses, although the overall incidence is exceedingly low. The gender distributions are equal and patient age ranges from 10 years to 73 years (mean of 46 years).…”

“…At this moment it was necessary to make the differential diagnosis between the following tumors, which appears in childhood and with an internal and superior location of the orbit: deep orbital dermoid cyst (nonaxial proptosis, CT scan reveals heterogeneous well circumscribed lesion); anterior encephalocele (fronto-ethmoidal); anterior orbit capillary haemangioma (dark blue or purple through the overlying skin and displaces the glob); anterior orbital lymphangioma (soft bluish mass in the upper nasal quadrant and cystic conjunctival component) [6]; rhabdomyosarcoma (located retrobulbar superior and inferior, CT scan reveals poorly defined mass of homogeneous density; adjacent bony destruction); chloroma (a form of acute myeloid leukaemia); neuroblastoma (malignant tumor, originate from primitive neuroblasts in the abdomen).…”
