Incidence of Symptomatic Venous Thromboembolism After Elective Knee Arthroscopy

Abstract: The ninety-day incidence of symptomatic venous thromboembolism after elective knee arthroscopy was relatively low, with a 0.25% incidence of deep venous thrombosis and a 0.17% incidence of pulmonary embolism. The overall ninety-day mortality after arthroscopic knee surgery was 0.04%.

“…7,[12][13][14][15] All VTEs were confirmed by positive Duplex ultrasonography, conventional venography ventilation/perfusion lung scan (V/Q scan), or computed tomography scan of the chest with intravenous contrast, as was indicated in each case. Indications for obtaining lower extremity imaging included calf pain or swelling on the operative side.…”

“…This methodology has been used to describe the incidence of symptomatic VTE after other elective orthopaedic procedures in the same integrated healthcare system [8]. Between January 2005 and December 2009, 30 medical centers performed shoulder arthroplasties.…”

“…Although venous thromboembolic (VTE) disease has been researched extensively and discussed in hip and knee arthroplasties [6,8,10], the phenomenon has not been as well described after shoulder surgery. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) are potential complications of shoulder procedures such as arthroscopy and closed reductions of the shoulder [2,11,14].…”

“…[5,6] Furthermore, arthroscopic procedures are reported to be associated with adverse events, including venous thromboembolism and even pulmonary embolism and death. [7] The incidence of venous thromboembolism was higher in patients who were 50 years of age or older, and the incidence in female patients was higher if they had been prescribed oral contraceptive medication. [7] In conclusion, the balance between the advantages and disadvantages weighs heavily on the choice of treatment; conservative or surgical.…”
