Incidence of traumatic spinal cord injury worldwide: a systematic review

Abstract: Data of epidemiologic information in TSCI are available for 41 countries of the world, which are mostly European and high-income countries. Researches and efforts should be made to gather information in developing and low-income countries to plan appropriate cost-effective preventive strategies in fight against TSCI.

“…[3] A fraction of the multifaceted issues regarding TSCI prevention may relate to knowledge and understanding of the causes of injury, in that these insights could guide appropriate preventive strategies. The research community has made significant strides in that regard, and we now know that causes of injury differ between continents, [4,5] let alone countries. [6] However, our knowledge of differences in characteristics and outcomes across causes of injury remains insufficient.…”

“…1,2,6 However, methodological inconsistency is one of the reasons for this perceived disparity. A recent worldwide review 7 and another including developing countries only, 8 estimated incidence rates of TSCI between 3.6 and 195.4 and 2.1-130.7 per million, respectively. Further, younger males remain at greater risk and the main causes of injury are context dependant.…”

“…There are more than one million patients with spine injury and SCI in China, and the number is still growing with 120,000 cases per year. [1][2][3][4][5][6] Restoring function in people with SCI is one of the most challenging tasks in clinical practice. Recently, neurorestorative strategies have been translated to clinical practice, and patients have benefited and their quality of life has improved.…”
