Incidence, risk factors, and cumulative risk of delirium among ICU patients: A case-control study

Abstract: Objectives Delirium is a common acute cognitive impairment syndrome among intensive care unit (ICU) patients. This study was aimed to investigate the incidence, risk factors, and cumulative risk of delirium among ICU patients. Methods A case-control study including clinical records of 452 patients were retrospectively analyzed. Delirium was assessed using the Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU and Richmond Agitation–Sedation Scale. Results … Show more

“…e second possible explanation is sleep deprivation [43] caused by pain, discomfort, anxiety, noise, light, and ICU care-related activities [44]. Previous studies supported that ventilator use is a significant risk factor for developing delirium [4,36,38,45,46]. Results of the current study are consistent with the previous studies [13,14,47,48] where metabolic acidosis was significantly associated with delirium development.…”

“…Patients with severe illness and organ dysfunction may face a higher risk of developing delirium and indicating that delirium was associated with serious conditions. is study identifies sedative drugs use as precipitating factors as reported in prior studies [18,[38][39][40][41].…”

“…In the ICU, multiple delirium risk factors are often present and can increase risk in an additive manner. 7 Delirium is also associated with prolonged hospitalisation, long-term cognitive and functional impairment and increased mortality. 8–10 As such, there is a critical need to improve understanding of this syndrome in patients with COVID-19.…”

“…Moreover, the habitual use of sleeping pills (especially benzodiazepines) is reported as a risk factor for POD [ 32 ], which supports our conclusions. Additionally, a previous study indicates that prolonged ICU hospitalization is positively associated with delirium among ICU patients [ 33 ]. All these studies are quite in accordance with our results.…”
