Incidental Bystander or Essential Culprit: A Systematic Review of Bacterial Significance in the Pathogenesis of Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma

Jose A. Foppiani,
Otakar Raska,
Iulianna Taritsa
et al.

Abstract: Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a distinct subtype of T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma that arises in the context of prolonged exposure to textured breast implants. The intent of this manuscript is to explore whether the bacterial presence in biofilms on these implants is a mere incidental finding or plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of BIA-ALCL. Our goal is to delineate the extent of bacterial involvement, offering insights into potential underlying mechanisms, and est… Show more

“…As of June 2023, there were 1264 global cases and 63 deaths. A majority of the cases involved exposure to textured surface implants [ 7 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. NCCN data suggest that bilateral cases could account for 2–4% of all BIA-ALCL diagnoses [ 9 ].…”

“…Consensus implicates that the induction of a chronic inflammatory state, especially in a genetic susceptibility background (i.e., genetic variants of DNMT3A , JAK-STAT3 pathway, and TP53 ), underlies malignant transformation [ 11 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ].…”
