Incidental Carcinoma after Cholecystectomy for Benign Disease of the Gallbladder: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract: This study aimed to determine the incidence and the prognosis of incidental carcinoma of the gallbladder (IGBC) after cholecystectomy through a meta-analysis. This meta-analysis included 51 studies and 436,636 patients with cholecystectomy. The incidence rate of IGBC after cholecystectomy was 0.6% (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.5–0.8%). The incidence rate of recent studies was not significantly different from those of past studies. The mean age and female ratio of the IGBC subgroup were not significantly diff… Show more

“…Moreover, incidental GBCs in cases with polyps < 10 mm have frequently been reported. 9,10 Radiomics analysis allows for the quantitative analysis of a wide range of morphologic and physiologic properties of selected tissues, including shape and histogram-based and textural features. 11,12 Radiomics has been widely applied in the analysis of various organs and tissues such as the liver, breast, kidney, brain, and lung.…”

“…The wide use of minimal invasive techniques has made the procedure extremely popular. Nearly 0.3-3% of the specimens present with a histological surprise (presence of malignancy) [ 12 - 13 ]. Almost all surgeons performing cholecystectomy encounter IGBC at least once in their professional carrier.…”

“…Moreover, incidental GBC in cases with polyps <10 mm have been reported. 10,11 Therefore, it is necessary to analyze other preoperative clinical characteristics and ultrasound findings that may be used to integrate variables with greater predictive value for GBP management. 12 The aim of this study was to develop a noninvasive, preoperative prediction model for assessing the malignancy risk of GBPs.…”
