Incidental finding of aberrant mitral valve chorda during a transesophageal echocardiography evaluation for suspected endocarditis

Abstract: Congenital defects involving anomalous chordae of the mitral valve with attachment in the left atrium are an extremely rare finding and may result in valvular insufficiency. Few cases have been reported in the literature with multiple variations in anatomical location and insertion of aberrant chordae within the left ventricle and left atrium. Reported cases have presented with cardiovascular symptoms leading to diagnosis of anomalous mitral valve chordae. We present a case of a young female in which an aberra… Show more

“…The management of these patients depends on the valvular pathology created by the chordae. As in our case, medical follow‐up is appropriate in cases that accessory chordae does not cause severe valve pathology, 3 while surgery is the treatment strategy in cases that accessory chordae causes severe valve regurgitation 4–8 …”

“…3D echocardiographic examination is vital method for visualization of mitral valve anatomy from enface view and give us opportunity to understand its relation with surrounding structures. 3 By 3D enface surgical view, the identification of the exact location and extend of structures, the entire pathology and the correct diagnosis are possible. Thus, in our patient 3D TEE had incremental value over 2D by providing assess the exact location of accessory chordae that was originating from anterior wall of left atrium not from IAS.…”
