Incidental Findings in Youths Volunteering for Brain MRI Research

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:MRIs are obtained in research in healthy and clinical populations, and incidental findings have been reported. Most studies have examined adults with variability in parameters of image acquisition and clinical measures available. We conducted a prospective study of youths and documented the frequency and concomitants of incidental findings.

“…Since HUNT MRI was a quite healthy cohort [8] and all findings were checked against patient records and patient medical history, it seems unlikely that the prevalence of incidental findings was overestimated in the study. Nevertheless, the number of incidental findings on brain MRI was higher in this study than in most published studies, particularly the earlier studies [1][2][3][4][5][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16].…”

“…The overall prevalence of CSP in the population varies greatly in the literature, depending on the cohort and technique used. 18,19 Moreover, a higher prevalence of CSP has been linked to neurodevelopmental diseases such as schizophrenia [20][21][22][23] as well as to genetic conditions. 24 Increased rates of CSP have also been reported among boxers and participants of other contact-sports exposed to repetitive head impacts.…”

“…Cystic changes in the pineal gland are a common incidental finding, with a prevalence of up to 10 % [16,17]. As a rule they have a diameter < 1 cm, but can reach a diameter of up to 2 cm (• ▶ Fig.…”

“…No threshold has been defined in the literature; thus in the case of clinical symptoms, a neurosurgical work-up is called for (Category II). Purely morphologically, it is frequently not possi- ble to distinguish it from a pinealcytoma in the image [17].…”
