Inclusive development: Software engineering requirements for universally accessible interactions

Abstract: The notion of 'universal access' reflects the concept of an Information Society in which potentially anyone (i.e. any user) will interact with computing machines, at anytime and anyplace (i.e. in any context of use) and for virtually anything (i.e. for any task). Towards reaching a successful and cost effective realization of this vision, it is critical to ensure that the future interface development tools provide all the necessary instrumentation to support inclusive design, i.e. facilitate inclusive developm… Show more

“…Others, arguing that user interfaces need to be assembled dynamically for individual users [24], have developed components of necessary infrastructure [22,23], but no general artifact seems to be available for evaluation at this time. Automatic generation of user interfaces offers the promise of providing personalized interfaces on-the-fly, but most systems, such as [20], need to be manually modified for each new platform or interaction style.…”

“…There are three ways to search the OATSoft inventory, namely based on the needs that the software meets ( All of the inventories mentioned above list AT software applications without taking into account or commenting on features like usability, stability, and functionality. This would require testing of each application by AT specialists, and the inclusion of results/comments about, for example, the installation process, the settings options, and the actual language support of each individual AT application [8]. The existing aforementioned websites do not include such data.…”

“…Universal access: Universal access reflects the concept of an information society in which potentially anyone will interact with computing machines at anytime and anyplace [72,82]. Universal access in situational e-Learning with continuous media thus requires that technology and instructional design should provide means to let end users easily access continuous media content and execute functionality on continuous media in an e-Learning system in different or even changing contexts.…”
