Inconsistent Reports of Sexual Intercourse Among South African High School Students

Abstract: These results suggest that researchers need to undertake efforts to deal specifically with inconsistent risk behavior data. These may include modification of data collection procedures and use of statistical methodologies that can account for response inconsistencies.

“…As discussed by Barnea et al 25 , this may happen because of fear of admitting use of illegal substances, or because certain actions are considered shameful. Conversely, some adolescents may "brag" or over-report engaging in disapproved or risky behaviors, perhaps as a result of their desire to conform to the presumed norms of their peers 1,26,27,28,29 .…”

“…First, although the size of the groups was consistent with national statistics, given the small size of the under-16 age group, the study only allowed us to detect of mainly medium to large effects. Second, due to the sensitive nature of some of the study variables assessed, such as age at first sexual intercourse, number of sexual partners and contraceptive use, it was difficult to control for socially desirable answers (Palen et al, 2008;Rose et al, 2009). Future research should therefore evaluate other sources of information (e.g., adolescents' partners) as a strategy to overcome the inconsistencies in the data.…”
