Social Sustainability Strategy across the Supply Chain: A Conceptual Approach from the Organisational Perspective

Much of the existing literature on the social aspects of sustainability in the supply chain has focused on dyadic buyer-supplier relationships. However, supply chains are much more extensive, featuring multi-tiered systems consisting of many interconnected sequential and parallel dyadic relationships; therefore, a more expansive and holistic approach to exploring the management and integration of social sustainability standards across the extended supply chain is desirable. This research attempts to help fill this void and considers the extent to which a series of sequential upstream and downstream supply chain partners, rather than only a focal organization’s immediate suppliers and buyers, influence the formulation process of the social aspects of a sustainability strategy and the deployment of associated practices across the extended supply chain. Findings in the literature indicate that, inter alia, sustainability efforts in the supply chain are likely to be guided by stakeholders’ sustainability desires/requirements, the geographical location of buyers and suppliers and the associated sustainability enforcement regulations and cultural norms, and the volume of trade between the buyer and supplier. This paper uses the results gleaned from a review of the literature to propose a conceptual framework for selection of sustainability strategy across the multi-tiered supply chain. Finally, we introduce a conceptual approach to the process of implementing and deploying the social aspects of sustainability strategies and practices across the supply chain using an integrated social-sustainability information management system (ISIMS).

Information technology can be used to make the best use of things like water, fertilizer, and pesticides in agriculture. Farmers can make better decisions about how to use their resources, reduce waste, and have less of an effect on the environment by using sensor-based monitoring, data analysis, and precision farming techniques. Information technology can make the agricultural supply chain more open, so that consumers and other stakeholders can find out where agricultural products come from and how they are made. The authors looked at articles that had been published in journals before and gave up-to-date information about how blockchain technology could affect agriculture and how it is run. The authors did a descriptive narrative evaluation of how blockchain technology affects agricultural business. They looked at the challenges and benefits of blockchain technology in agriculture. The writing process took four months (between January 2023 and April 2023). We searched databases such as PubMed, Z-library, Publons, Medline, JSTOR, and Google Scholar and obtained original and review articles published in various journals, textbooks, and review papers. Conclusively, one of the primary challenges in agricultural business management is ensuring that farmers, especially those in remote or economically disadvantaged areas, have access to the necessary technology. This includes access to affordable hardware, software, and internet connectivity. Unequal access to technology can result in a digital divide, where some farmers are unable to take advantage of the benefits of information technology in agriculture. This review demonstrated that farmers and agribusinesses need to implement robust data privacy and security measures to protect their information from cyber threats and ensure compliance with relevant data protection regulations.

Digital Transformation is defined as the use of technology to radically improve performance or reach of enterprises (Westerman et al., 2018) The existing literature on digitalization in the food industry is limited. Meanwhile, the literature suggests that digitalization is an issue that is unavoidable at some point in all industries and that companies must adapt in order to maintain their competitive position. The purpose of this research is to look into the digital technologies that are commonly used in the food industry in order to identify the challenges and opportunities that exist in digital transformation. In this study more than twenty five articles collected and reviewed. Recent published articles were collected from high impact journals which consist of the review related to digital transformation in food industry. When this study was completed, it was discovered that the food industry is lagging behind other sectors in terms of digitalization. The industry is confronted with enormous challenges and one of the most important challenges, as well as resistance to digitalization in the food industry, is its profitability. Digital transformation has increased traceability throughout the food industry and has also reduced labour costs and production time.
