Incorporating Timesharing Scheme in Ecoindustrial Multiperiod Chilled and Cooling Water Network Design

Abstract: Chilled/cooling water is a common utility widely used in office or commercial buildings for air conditioning. It is also used in various industries such as semiconductor fabrication and the food industries for process cooling. Previous studies focused on the synthesis of chilled/cooling water networks within individual plants. The establishment of an ecoindustrial park (EIP) that originates from the concept of industrial symbiosis allows individual plants to cooperate with each other so as to achieve greater w… Show more

“…Among the literature, three dominant categories of optimization tools are present, segregated by their discussion on the type of resource flows optimized—water (see, e.g., Lee, Chen, Lin, & Foo, ; Leong, Lee, & Chew, ; Ramos, Boix, Aussel, Montastruc, & Domenech, ), energy (see, e.g., Chae, Kim, Yoon, & Park, ; Hipólito‐Valencia et al., ; Liew et al., ), and material (see, e.g., Cimren, Fiksel, Posner, & Sikdar, ; Noureldin & El‐Halwagi, ).…”

“…For example, Cimren, Fiksel, Posner, and Sikdar (2011) developed a tool for designing an optimal network and material flows that utilized industrial by‐products as feedstocks for other industrial processes, that is, by‐product synergy. Leong, Lee, and Chew (2016) proposed a design methodology that enables individual plants to cooperate with each other so as to achieve greater water and energy recovery through interplant chilled/cooling water reuse/recycle. Recently, many researchers have been working on product‐service systems (PSSs) as a means for realizing CE (Tukker, 2015).…”

“…Recently, alternative approaches to improve EIPs and water network designs have been studied. For instance, the impact of periodical operations on EIPs, including the variation of market demands and plant shutdown schedules, has been analyzed by Leong et al 10 Also, a model for minimizing emergy (total consumed energy) of a water network in an EIP has been analyzed as well. 11 Furthermore, the optimal design of a water network with two-stage regeneration recycling was proposed.…”
