“…Although the variability in the present study was relatively high, good replication, as recommended by Scarlett et al , meant that significant differences in growth and reproduction were detected compared with control. Similar problems of variability exist with alternative protocols for sediment test organisms such as the 28‐d study with the amphipod Leptocheirus plumulosus . Further work on the relationships among feeding behavior of amphipods, the composition of natural sediments, and the bioavailability of chemicals might help us to understand the variability observed in these studies and aid in interpretation of the results.…”
