Incorporation of a hydrophilic amide monomer into a one-step self-etch adhesive to increase dentin bond strength: Effect of application time

Abstract: Recently, commercially available 1-SEAs with a zero application time (i.e., no waiting time) concept, including Clearfil Universal Bond Quick, have been introduced. Clinicians desire not only a reduction in the number of application steps but also quicker application times for dental adhesives, however, a shortened application time may fail to maintain their bond ability 13-15). Previously, it has been reported that a shorter application time than instructed by manufacturers leads to lower bond strengths to de… Show more

“…Both these adhesives incorporate 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP), bisphenol-A-diglycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), a CQ/amine initiating system, and they are solvated with ethanol and water. However, despite the apparent similarity, their polymerization behaviors may be influenced by the concentration of these components and/or the presence of other coinitiator 13,38,39) . In UBQ, HEMA is partially substituted with a hydrophilic amide monomer, and its reduced concentration compared to SBU could contribute to the observed difference in the DCs of the tested 1-SEAs.…”

“…Therefore, the infiltration of water into the adhesive layer of SBU could contribute to the dislodgement of the resin composite from cavities despite the slightly improved chemical interaction with the lithium disilicate achieved by warm air-blowing. To reduce the negative effects of HEMA, UBQ utilizes a multifunctional hydrophilic amide monomer, which contributes to a decrease in water sorption and an improvement in mechanical properties 26) . Combined with the positive effect of warm air-blowing on solvent evaporation, UBQ maintained its adaptation after the 24-h water storage period due to the improved mechanical properties of the adhesive layer.…”

“…The stability of the bond was further challenged by the subsequent 1 year of water storage, which resulted in the detachment of all five specimens in the case of normal air-dried UBQ pretreated with normal air-dried CP and four specimens if SE2 was used. The presence of hydrophilic monomers-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate in both adhesives [26] and a methacrylamide monomer in UBQ [27]-and remnants of solvents in UBQ probably facilitated water sorption into the adhesive layers [24], which led to the hydrolytic degradation of the chemical bond with LDS.…”
