Incorporation of stochastic chemistry on dust grains in the Meudon PDR code using moment equations

Abstract: Context. Unlike gas-phase reactions, chemical reactions taking place on interstellar dust grain surfaces cannot always be modeled by rate equations. Because of the small grain sizes and low flux, these reactions may exhibit large fluctuations and thus require stochastic methods such as the moment equations. Aims. We evaluate the formation rates of H 2 , HD, and D 2 molecules on dust grain surfaces and their abundances in the gas phase under interstellar conditions. Methods. We incorporate the moment equations … Show more

“…As shown by many authors, this formation mechanism can only take place in a small window of grain temperatures (Biham & Lipshtat 2002;Biham et al 2005;Le Petit et al 2009), namely 10-20 K for amorphous carbons. As a consequence, the LH mechanism becomes the major H 2 formation process at moderate visual extinctions.…”

“…Le Petit et al (2009) included the possibility of the rejection of the impinging hydrogen atoms, when they land on an already occupied site, and introduced these mechanisms into the Meudon PDR code together with the size distribution of grains, while assuming a uniform dust temperature for all grain sizes. The net result, for H 2 formation, is that the reaction is only efficient for a narrow window of dust temperatures, ranging typically from 11 K to 19 K, depending on the values of desorption and diffusion barriers, as also pointed out by Chang et al (2006).…”

“…This mechanism has been studied in detail using the master equation approach (Biham & Lipshtat 2002), the moment equation approach (Lipshtat & Biham 2003;Le Petit et al 2009) and Monte Carlo simulations (Chang et al 2005;Chang et al 2006). Laboratory experiments have also been conduced and their results modeled (Pirronello et al 1997a(Pirronello et al ,b, 1999Katz et al 1999).…”

“…Even so, approximations are needed to render the approach more tractable for large-scale calculations: these include using the master equation only for reactive surface species of small abundance (Stantcheva & Herbst 2004;Acharyya et al 2005) and using the method of moments (Barzel & Biham 2007). Although useful for H 2 formation (Le Petit et al 2009) and larger systems of surface equations, the latter approximation is still under development for systems coupled to gas-phase chemistry because of mathematical instabilities. Recently, so-called hybrid methods have been used to stabilize the moment equation approach (Du & Parise 2011).…”
