Increased Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) Level Is Highly Associated with Low Skeletal Muscle Mass in Asymptomatic Adults: A Population-Based Study

Abstract: We investigated the relationship between high carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels and low skeletal muscle mass (LMM) in asymptomatic adults in a population-based study. A total of 202,602 adults (mean age 41.7 years) without malignancy, stroke, cardiovascular disease, or chronic lung/liver disease were included. A high CEA level was defined as ≥5 ng/mL. Skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) was calculated based on appendicular muscle mass (kg)/height (m)2. Participants were classified into three groups based on S… Show more

“…Details of the cohort explanation and measurement methods have been provided in the previous studies by our team [ 10 , 11 ]. In brief, this was a population-based cross-sectional study based on the Kangbuk Samsung Health Study, which is a cohort study that includes individuals who participated in an annual or biennial health checkup program in South Korea.…”

“…Serum CEA levels have been reported to predict IPMN aggressiveness [ 19 ]. However, because CEA levels may increase in the adult population without malignancies [ 20 ], it may be difficult to determine clinical significance in differences near low values, as in our cases.…”

“…Relying only on the traditional TNM stage to judge the prognosis of patients with CRC[ 22 ], especially patients with nonmetastatic CRC, is difficult, and additional influencing factors should be considered[ 23 - 25 ]. Over the past two decades, many molecular biomarkers of CRC have been extensively investigated, but serum tumor markers remain the most commonly used.…”
