Increased Egg Production by Active Immunization against Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide in the Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo)1

Abstract: Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is a hypothalamic prolactin (PRL)-releasing factor in the turkey. The hypothesis in the present study was that active immunization of turkeys with VIP would neutralize endogenous VIP, decrease circulating PRI, and consequently prevent the expression of incubation behavior. Large white female turkeys were divided into three experimental groups comprising untreated controls, control turkeys immunized with keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH), and turkeys immunized with synthetic ch… Show more

“…Similarly, in this study, the same sites including the site I31391359D of the NPY gene and the A19960831G of the GnRHR gene were selected to analyze their effects on EN300, and the results were compatible with findings of Dunn et al (2004). Previous reports confirmed that active immunization with VIP could increase egg production in turkeys (El Halawani et al, 1995;Caldwell et al, 1999). Also, another study discovered that an AGG indel in the 5' regulatory region of the VIP gene was related to EN300 (Zhou et al, 2010).…”

“…Prolactin secretion in birds is under the stimulatory control of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP). Active immunization with VIP results in a substantial reduction in the plasma prolactin concentration and an increase in flock egg production due to the elimination of incubation behavior [53].…”

“…Furthermore, PRL secretion induced by hypothalamic extract can be blocked by immunoneutralization with anti-porcine VIP (pVIP) in turkeys [11]. Active immunization of turkeys against endogenous VIP prevents the expression of incubation beAccepted February 12, 1994 havior while increasing egg production [12] and abolishes PRL release from electrically stimulated hypothalami [13]. These data suggest that VIP is a PRL-releasing factor in avian species.…”
