Increased expression of microRNA-148a in osteosarcoma promotes cancer cell growth by targeting PTEN

Abstract: Osteosarcoma is the most common type of primary malignant bone tumor, and deregulated microRNAs (miRNAs or miRs) in osteosarcoma have attracted great attention. In the present study, through miRNA microarray analysis, it was identified that miR-148a expression was significantly increased in osteosarcoma tissues. Increased miR-148a expression was significantly correlated with tumor progression and prognosis. Furthermore, increased miR-148a expression could promote osteosarcoma growth in vitro and in vivo, and t… Show more

“…In addition, several miRNAs have been reported to be dysregulated in osteosarcoma 24 . As miR-422a inhibits the proliferation of osteosarcoma cells by targeting BCL2L2 and KRAS 25 , miR-148a promotes cancer cell growth in osteosarcoma by targeting phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) 26 and miR-133a inhibits osteosarcoma progression by targeting Bcl-xL and Mcl-1 27 . In this study, we confirmed that miR-143 is the regulator of bone formation; thus, miR-143 is involved in both osteoblast differentiation and carcinogenesis.…”

“…It has been identified that miR-148a serves important functions in various types of cancer (35,36). Our previous study demonstrated that miR-148a exerted metastasis-suppressive effects in NSCLC, suppressing NSCLC invasion and metastasis in vitro and in vivo (19).…”
