Increased Incidence of Ophthalmologic Findings in Children With Concurrent Isolated Nonsyndromic Metopic Suture Abnormalities and Deformational Cranial Vault Asymmetry

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this project was to study the incidence of ophthalmologic findings which are known to be risk factors for amblyopia in children who have coexisting metopic suture abnormalities and deformational plagiocephaly (DP) and brachycephaly (DB). Design: Institutional Review Board–approved retrospective study reviewing records of a consecutive cohort of children under 2 years of age with metopic suture abnormalities and cranial vault asymmetries seen in both the plastic surgery and ophthalmolo… Show more

“…Numerous studies have documented the ophthalmological outcome in unilateral coronal craniosynostosis, such as strabismus, astigmatism and anisometropia (Chung et al, 2015;Gupta et al, 2003;Levy et al, 2007;Luo et al, 2020;Macintosh et al, 2007;Tarczy-Hornoch et al, 2008;Touzé et al, 2022). Ophthalmic manifestations in other forms of nonsyndromic craniosynostosis are less described; nonetheless, visual dysfunctions, strabismus, refractive errors and amblyopia have been reported (Denis, Genitori, Bardot, et al, 1994;Macintosh et al, 2011;Nguyen et al, 2016;Roider et al, 2021).…”

“…Strabismus links to improper eye position, including esotropia and exotropia (1). The prevalence of strabismus varies in different regions or nations, but what is in common is the case that its incidence is increasing year by year (2). Refractive differences between the eyes, hyperopia, related family history, and improper behaviors during the gestation period (drinking, smoking, or drug dependence) are all clear risk factors for strabismus.…”
