Increased levels of serum interleukin-12 in Graves' disease

Abstract: We investigated serum total interleukin-12 (IL-12) levels in patients with Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The serum IL-12 levels in Graves' disease were significantly increased in the hyperthyroid state, and were decreased during treatment with methimazole or propylthiouracil in accordance with the decline of free tri-iodothyronine (T 3 ) levels, free thyroxine levels and thyroidbinding inhibiting immunoglobulin (TBII) levels. When T 3 was administered orally to normal subjects, serum IL-12 level… Show more

“…IL-12 induces IL-2, IFN-γ and TNF-β from Th1 cells and IFN-γ from NK (natural killer) cells. Increased serum levels of IL-12 have been reported in GD [21][22][23]. Furthermore, IL-12B mRNA expression has been demonstrated in thyroid tissues from patients with GD [24] and in orbital fat tissues from patients with active GO [25], but not in extraocular muscle tissues (EOM), or EOM-derived T cell lines from patients with GO undergoing corrective strabismus surgery [26].…”

“…Increased serum levels of IL-12 have been reported in patients with Graves' disease as well as those with silent thyroiditis [25,26]. It was also reported that IL-12 is involved in the development of animal experimental AITD [27].…”

“…Serum levels of IL-18 have consistently been reported to be elevated in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus [20,23,24]. Previously, we reported the levels of several cytokines such as IL-12 and IL-18 to be increased in hyperthyroid Graves' disease [8,25]. A previous study reported that serum levels of IL-18 increase in patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy [26]; induces insulin resistance in mice.…”
