Increased matrix metalloproteinase-3 serum levels in rheumatic diseases: relationship with synovitis and steroid treatment

Abstract: Objective: To determine matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) serum levels in patients with rheumatic diseases and to study the relation between MMP-3 and C reactive protein (CRP) levels. Methods: MMP-3 serum levels were determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in (a) patients with active inflammatory rheumatic diseases: rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, acute crystal arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis; (b) patients with active inflammatory systemic diseases… Show more

“…1C, rightmost lane). The enzymes(s) responsible for endogenous IgG cleavage in the protease-rich SF and breast tumor environments (32)(33)(34) were not identified in the present investigation. Also, the rates at which IgG cleavage products are generated or accumulate in vivo were not specifically investigated here, although such determinations are of obvious interest for future study.…”

“…19,20 A possible correlation between steroid therapy and MMP-3 levels was examined in patients in the present study. All patients with active disease and 4 of 14 patients in remission received corticosteroids.…”

“…It can degrade various fibronectins and collagens, which are regarded as proteins found in bone and cartilage, such as collagen type IV, VI, and VII (Dhir et al, 2013). MMP-3 is implicated in the degradation of the ECM and tissue remodeling in normal biological processes, including embryonic development and cell reproduction as well as in pathological processes such as tumor metastasis and arthritis (Ribbens et al, 2002;Arends et al, 2011). In addition, MMP-3 is expressed in the serum and joint fluid of patients with AS and its level is closely related to the disease activity (Yang et al, 2004a).…”
