Increased Numbers of Annulate Lamellae in Myocardium of Chick Embryos Incubated at Abnormal Temperatures

Abstract: Annulate lamellae have been observed in the myocardium of 18-day-old chick embryos maintained at the normal temperature of 100°F and at 90°F during the last week of incubation. An increased number of annulate lamellae was observed in heart muscle of embryos incubated at 90°F. This is probably caused by a persistent production of these organelles, since annulate lamellae are present in greater frequency than in 11-day-old embryos incubated at 100°F. In the hypertrophic hearts of 18-day-old embryos incubated at … Show more

“…In a number of cell types, it has been described that ribosomes are not attached to membranes of annulate lamellae (2,5,6,12,14,20,30,32). However, in several other instances, ribosomes have been described as being directly attached to the membranes of annulate lamellae (11,(16)(17)(18).…”

“…Similarly, a large amount of annulate lamellae has been described in hepatocytes after injection of the animal with $-3 furylalanine (10), in hyperplastic liver nodules of rats treated with carcinogens (20,21), rarely in pancreatic acinar cells of animals treated with azaserine (11), and in myocardial cells of 18-day chick embryos incubated at 90°F (22).…”

“…Annulate lamellae are usually present in normal Sertoli cells. They are considered to participate in synthesis of proteins (Merkow and Leighton -1966; Sun and White -1979) and tubulin (De Brabander and Borger -1976). Also, they may contribute to synthesis of steroid hormones (Lacy -1962).…”
