Increased Resting Metabolic Rate in Girls with Rett Syndrome Compared to Girls with Developmental Disabilities

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the body composition and resting metabolic rate (RMR) of girls with Rett syndrome (RS) (n=15) and to compare them with an equally handicapped group of girls with developmental disabilities (DD) (n=13). While RTT girls are generally not obese, perhaps due to the inability to self-feed, they have elevated morning leptin and adiponectin serum levels (17) as well as alterations in energy balance (26)(27)(28).
