Increased risk of psoriasis in children and elderly patients with asthma: a longitudinal follow‐up study using a national sample cohort

Abstract: Background: Several previous studies reported the elevated risk of asthma in children with psoriasis. This study aimed to extend previous research regarding the risk of psoriasis in children with asthma to an entire population subdivided by age. Methods:The 2002-2013 Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service-National Sample Cohort (HIRA-NSC) was used. The 167,693 participants with asthma were matched with 167,693 control participants for age, sex, income, region of residence, hypertension history, … Show more

“…Older patients with psoriasis (≥50 years) had a higher risk of asthma (OR = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.44-1.88) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (HR = 2.19, 95% CI: 1.27-3.77) than younger ones [12,23]. In children, observational studies suggest an increased risk of asthma compared to the general population, but the data are inconsistent [13,[17][18][19]. Furthermore, the increased susceptibility to asthma in children was associated with moderate to severe psoriasis [17].…”

“…Infections can play a role in both psoriasis and lung diseases. The altered microbiome in the lower respiratory tract, which can increase the risk of psoriasis, interacts with the innate mucosal immune system and has been implicated in the development of asthma [18,60]. Furthermore, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a well-known risk factor associated with psoriasis and lung diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pulmonary arterial hypertension [59,61,68].…”

“…Psoriasis is stimulated by the abnormal epidermal proliferation, leading to scaly erythematous plaques. (9) The pathophysiology of psoriasis includes an interplay between elements of the immune response, inflammatory components and an abnormal proliferation and differentiations of the keratinocytes, (10) results in scaly erythematous plaques. (9) Psoriasis has many different clinical presentations.…”

“…With the increasing incidence of allergic diseases, the relationship between allergic diseases and comorbid conditions, especially autoimmune diseases, has attracted much attention. Kim et al . performed a longitudinal follow‐up study in a national sample cohort and report that children and elderly patients with asthma have an increased risk for the development of psoriasis.…”
