“…In addition to being a marker of interferon activity, neopterin induces or enhances cytotoxicity and exhibits antioxidant properties [13]. Recent studies showed higher levels of plasma neopterin in older persons with DS than controls; [15] however, none examined the levels in children or adolescents with DS. Because reports [12,16] indicate that inflammatory and immune mechanisms are involved in the pathogenesis of DS, and increased Aβ42 levels are found in their brain extracts, we hypothesized that neopterin levels would be higher in children with DS than in controls and would correlate with plasma Aβ40 and Aβ42 levels.…”
